교회는 천사들의 존재를 신앙 교리로 선언(제4차 라테라노 공의회, 제1차 바티칸 공의회)하였지만, 천사에 대한 학자들의 여러 학설에 대하여 어떠한 유권적 결정을 내린 일은 없다. 다만 교회는 미카엘, 가브리엘, 라파엘 천사의 이름 외에 다른 이름들을 사용하는 것을 금하였고, 오늘의 축일과 수호 천사 기념일(10월 2일)을 제정하여 천사 공경을 권하고 있다.
천사는 하느님으로부터 창조된 피조물로서 하느님을 모시고 하느님을 찬양하며 종종 하느님으로부터 우리가 살고 있는 이 세상에 천상의 메신저로 종종 파견된다. 하느님께서는 우리 감각의 대상인 이 세상과 우리의 감각을 초월하는 영의 세계도 창조하셨다는 것을 일깨워주며 교회는 천사의 존재를 신앙교리로 선언하였다.
성서에 의하면 천사는 하느님의 사자들이요, 하느님으로부터 나오는 능력들이며, 하느님을 섬기는 영적인 존재들이다(히브 1,14). 성경은 자주 이들을 인간의 모습으로 표현하고 있으며, 성경에 나오는 천사 이야기는 모두가 하느님께서 갖가지 모양으로 우리에게 관심을 쏟고 계시다는 진리를 내포하고 있다.
미카엘 천사는 교회가 전례에서 공경하는 세 분의 천사 중의 한 분인데, 구약과 신약에서 각각 두 번 언급되었으며, ’누가 하느님과 같은가’라는 뜻을 지녔다. 미카엘 천사는 주로 천상 군대의 장수, 악에 대한 수호가, 임종자의 수호자로 등장한다.
가브리엘은 ’하느님의 힘’이란 뜻이며, 다니엘이 본 환시와 예언을 설명해 준 대천사이며, 즈가리아와 마리아에게 각각 탄생을 알린 하느님의 사자이다.
그리고 라파엘은 ’하느님의 치유’라는 뜻이며, 토비아를 위해 파견된 천사이며, 맹인들의 수호천사로 큰 공경을 받고 있다. 비록 교회가 천사들의 존재를 신앙 교리로 선언했지만 위의 세 천사 외에 다른 이름들을 사용하는 것을 금하는데, 그것은 여러 가지 학설들이 있기 때문인듯 하다.

마리아에게 그리스도를 잉태한 사실을 고지(告知)하는 대천사로서 가브리엘은 가장 많이 그려졌다. 이 성화는 화벽 (畵壁, Ikonostasis)의 한 중앙을 구성하는, 성문(聖門)이라고도 불리우는 장문의 꼭대기가 둥그렇게 된 맨 윗부분이다. 화벽은 그리스 정교회 안의 제단과 신자들 사이를 구분하는 벽이다. 꼭대기가 둥그렇게 마무리 된 왕문의 맨 윗부분에는 흔히 왼쪽에 가브리엘이 오른쪽이 마리아가 그려진다. 가브리엘이 마리아에게 그리스도를 잉태한 사실을 고지(告知)하는 것을 기념하는 축제일은 3월 25일이다.
이와 같은 마리아에게 그리스도를 잉태한 사실을 고지하는 장면의 대천사 가브리엘의 열렬한 동작이 매우 이색적이다. 그는 오른손을 크게 벌리고 마리아에게 기쁜 소식을 전한다. 녹색의 옷위에 엷은 색의 어깨망토를 걸쳤는데 기이한 주름이 거의 날개 끝까지 닿는다. 가브리엘의 뒤에는 한 가옥이 보이고, 그 지붕위에 있는 빨간 수건은 양파형의 탑 가까이 휘날리고 있다. 15세기 노프고로드 회화양식을 보이는 흥미있는 묘사는 높은 수준에 달한다. 라파엘과 미카엘와 함께 대천사에 속한다. 다니엘이 본 환시와 예언을 설명해 준 대천사이며(다니엘 8, 16-26), 즈가리야에게 세례자 요한의 출생을 예고하였고(루가 1,11-21), 그리스도의 탄생을 마리아에게 알린 하느님의 사자이다.(루가 1,26-38)

’하느님의 사랑’ ’하느님의 권세’ ’하느님께서 당신을 권세 있는 분으로 드러내다.’라는 뜻으로 성서에서 본 가브리엘은 구약에서는 다니엘에게 ’70주간’에 관한 예언을 예고한다.(다니 9,21-27) 신약에서는 세례자 요한의 탄생을 알리기 위하여 즈가리아에게 나타나 "하느님께서 너의 기도를 들어 허락하셨다. 너의 아내 엘리샤벳이...."(루가 1, 11) 성모 마리아에게 나타나 "은총이 가득하신 마리아여..."(루가 1,26) 라고 기쁜 소식을 나타냈고, 요셉의 꿈에도 나타났다.
가브리엘은 유대의 전설과 외경에서 뿐만 아니라, 이슬람 문학에서도 ’이브릴’이란 이름으로 등장한다. 보통 위풍당당하고, 영화되어 있으며 느슨한 가운을 입은 모습으로 그려진다. 1951년 1월 12일 비오 12세에 의해 텔레커뮤니케이션에 종사하는 사람들의 수호자로 선포된다.

구세주 예수 그리스도께서는 제자들을 부르실 때 그들을 항해 "정말 잘 들어 두어라. 너희는 하늘이 열려 있는 것과 하느님의 천사들이 하늘과 사람의 아들 사이를 오르내리는 것을 보게 될 것이다"(요한 1,51)라고 말씀하셨다.
주님께서는 이 말씀으로써 당신이 천사들과 가깝게 지내신다는 것을 표시하셨다. 참으로 성서를 보면 천사들이 발현해 하느님을 섬긴 예가 적지않게 발견되지만, 그중에도 다음에 말하는 가브리엘 대천사 같은 이는 하느님과 가장 깊은 관계를 맺고 있으며, 또한 특별한 사명을 위탁받은 분이라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 가브리엘은 우선 성서에 이름이 나오는 3대천사 중의 한 분이시다.
그는 천사의 9계급 중 8계급에 속하며, ’하느님의 영웅’이라는 뜻인 가브리엘이라고 불리며, 구세주에게 나타난 하느님의 전능을 표시하게끔 정해져 있었다.
성서를 보면 구세주와 관련되어 가브리엘 천사가 세상에 파견된 일이 세번 있었다. 첫 파견은 구약 시대로 다니엘 예언자에게 나타나 "다니엘아, 네가 알려고 하는 것을 깨우쳐 주려고 이렇게 왔다..(중략).... 너희가 돌아가 예루살렘을 재건하리라는 말씀이 계신 때부터 기름 부어 세운 영도자가 오기까지는 칠 주간이 흐를 것이다. 그뒤에 육십이 주간 어려운 시대가 계속되겠지만...(중략)... 이렇게 육십이 주간이 지난 다음, 기룸 부어 세운이가 재판도 받지 않고 암살 당하며...(중략)... 반주간이 지나면 희생 제사와 곡식 예물 봉헌을 중지시키고 성소 한 쪽에 파괴자의 우상을 세울 것이다. 그러나 결국 그 파괴자도 예정된 벌을 받고 말리라"(다니 9,21-27 참조)하고 말하며 구세주의 오심을 알려 주었다.

여기서 말한 주(週)는 보통 1주 7일을 가리키는 것이 아니라 7년을 1주라고 한것이다. 그러므로 앞에서 제시한 70주간이라 함은 4백 90년을 의미한다. 이것을 역사적으로 본다면 예수께서 태어나신 것은 바로 유다인들이 바빌론의 유배에서 해방되어 적군에게 황폐된 예루살렘의 재건을 시작한 때부터 490년째의 해이다. 또한 한 주간의 중간, 즉 약 35세(정확히는 33세)때에 주님께서 십자가 위에 달려 고귀한 피를 흘리시며 구약의 희생, 제물을 일절 폐지하시고 그대신 세상 마칠때까지 계속 될 고결한 성체를 봉헌하는 미사 성제를 창설하신 것이나, 또한 그분이 세상을 떠나신 후 30년이 되던 해 예루살렘을 공격해 온 로마의 장군 디도의 군대로 말미암아 성전이 여지없이 파괴된 사실도 모두 예언대로 실현된 것이다.

이처럼 대천사 가브리엘은 다니엘의 예언으로 유다인들에게 구세주를 맞는 마음의 준비를 시키고자 했고, 또한 예언의 시기가 도래하여 구세주의 탄생이 임박해지자 그는 재차 하느님에게서 파견되어 이번은 주님의 길을 닦는 성 요한 세례자의 탄생을 알리기 위해그의 부친 즈자리야에게 발현했다. 이 사람은 유다교의 사제였고 오낼 세월 아내에게 자식이 없는 것을 근심하여 열심히 기도했지만 아무 응답이 없었다.
어느 날 성전에서 분향을 하고 있는 동안 분향 제단 오른쪽에 서 있는 주님의 천사를 보고 몹시 당황하면 두려움에 사로잡혓다.
천사는 그에게 이렇게 말했다. "두려워하지 말라, 즈가리야. 하느님께서 네 간구를 들어주셨다. 네 아내 엘리사벳이 아들을 낳을 터이니 아기의 이름을 요한이라 하여라. 너도 기뻐하고 즐거워할 터이지만, 많은 사람이 또한 그의 탄생을 기뻐할 것이다. 그는 주님보시기에 훌륭한 인물이 되겠기 때문이다. 그는 포도주나 그 밖의 어떤 술도 마시지 않겠고 어머니 태중에서 부터 성령을 가득히 받을 것이며 많은 이스라엘 배성을 그들의 주 하느님의 품으로 다시 데려올 것이다. 그가 바로 엘리야의 정신과 능력을 가지고 주님보다 먼저 올 사람이다. 그는 아비와 자식을 화해시키고 거역하는 자들에게 올바른 생각을 하게 하여 주님을 맞아들일만한 백성이 되도록 준비할 것이다"(루가 1, 12-17)하고 알렸다.
그리고 즈가리야가 믿는 기색이 없는 것을 보고 또 "나는 하느님을 모시는 시종 가브리엘이다. 이 기쁜 소식을 전하라는 분부를 받들고 너에게 와 일러주었다"(루가 1,19)하고 말하며 불신의 벌로 그를 요한이 탄생할 때까지 벙어리가 되게 했다. 이처럼 천사께 대한 불복종을 결국 하느님께 대한 불복종으로 간주했던 것이다.

마지막으로 가브리엘 대천사가 세상에 파견된 사명은 그에 있어서 가장 기쁘고도 또한 영광이기도 앴다. 그것은 구세주의 어머니로 간택되신 나자렛의 동정녀 마리아를 천사보다 높은 하늘의 어머니라고 공경하며 우선 매우 겸손된 마음으로 "기뻐하소서, 은총을 입은 이여, 주님께서 당신과 함께 계십니다"(루가 1,28)하고 인사했다
그리고 마리아가 어째서 이런 찬미를 받는가 하고 놀라워하자 말을 계속하여 "두려워하지 마시오. 마리아! 당신은 하느님으로부터 은총을 받았습니다... 그는 크게 되어 지극히 높으신 분의 아들이라 불릴 것입니다 주 하느님께서 그의 조상 다윗의 옥좌를 그에게 주실 것입니다. 그리하여 그는 영원히 야곱의 가문위에 군림할 것이며 그의 왕권은 끝이 없을 것입니다"(루가 1,30-33)라고 말하며 오랫동안 기다려온 구세주의 거룩한 어머니로 선택되셨음을 알렸다.
그리고 다시 마리아에게 그 잉태는 동정 그대로 있으면서 성령의 능력으로 이루어진다는 것을 설명해 드리니 마리아는 지극한 겸손으로 "보십시오, 저는 주님의 여종입니다. 당신 말씀대로 저에게 이루어지기 바랍니다"(루가 1, 38)하고 대답했다. 이로써 가브리엘 대천사도 감탄하지 않을 수 없었을 것이다. 이와 같이 가브리엘 대천사는 하느님의 구원 대사업의 준비를 완수한 것이다.

Readings You should be aware that the word "angel" denotes a function rather than a nature. Those holy spirits of heaven have indeed always been spirits. They can only be called angels when they deliver some message. Moreover, those who deliver messages of lesser importance are called angels; and those who proclaim messages of supreme importance are called archangels.
And so it was that not merely an angel but the archangel Gabriel was sent to the Virgin Mary. It was only fitting that the highest angel should come to announce the greatest of all messages.... So too Gabriel, who is called God’s strength, was sent to Mary. He came to announce the One who appeared as a humble man to quell the cosmic powers. Thus God’s strength announced the coming of the Lord of the heavenly powers, mighty in battle.

GEMMA GALGANI 1878-1903
Among all the stigmatics, she is the only one who was always able to see her guardian angel.
Gemma Galgani is a true diamond among the "Flower of the Saints," a unique person in the Church because, like Marilyn Monroe, her beauty has been made permanent by her death. She is unquestionably the prettiest of all the saints in the calendar, for "Divine Providence" gave her a dazzling, almost unreal beauty, with the features of a noblewoman and a delicacy worthy of Carole Bouquet when she starred in Bunuel’s "That Obscure Object of Desire". Gemma Galgani is the aristocracy of discreet luxe, the power of humility, voluntary victim of divine brutality. Gemma Galgani is almost an illustration from the novel The Angel of Fire, which tells how a young woman, Renata, looks for her guardian Angel, whom she was privileged to see constantly during her childhood, a little like the Brasilian nun Cecilia Cony.
But Renata, unlike Cecilia Cony, outraged her Angel, Maniel, when, attaining puberty, she asked him in all innocence to make love with her. The Angel left her promising at any rate to come back in human form when the time came. After that Renata, become a woman, never ceased to search for him and tried to discern in every man the presence of her Angel. This was a novel based on the relationship between the terrestrial and celestial worlds, where Angels, demons and humans are intermixed in a perpetual fight for souls, a perfect setting for Gemma Galgani. She spent her (short) life swimming in the supernatural as others did in music. Angels and demons waged daily battle for the soul of that young and magnificent virgin. We can understand that. I know some who would not hesitate for a second to confront Satan himself for her beautiful eyes.
Gemma Galgani’s life is a synopsis of this permanent combat, of every soul’s tribulations. Only with her, it was carried to extremes. A predestined soul, Gemma accepted her mission very early without really understanding what it was. But from the end of her adolescence she wanted to become a Passionist nun. And as usual, when she was twenty a paralysis of the legs--Pott’s Disease--immobilised her. As if this were not enough, she was then felled by a tumor in her head coupled with a purulent ear infection.
The doctors operated on her several times, but, unable to cure her, finally decided to give up on her, decreeing that science could not save her from a quick death. Gemma did not give up hope. Her spiritual life was already prodigious and, bedridden, she started upon a novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and to Marguerite-Marie Alacoque. The morning of the ninth day, she inexplicably recovered from all her ills. It was Friday, March 3, 1899. From that day on, much more grateful to Christ than to the doctors, Gemma regularly observed the holy hour, a habit which bore her toward constant devotion to Christ. And while praying before her crucifix on a Friday in March, 1901, she felt the flagellation of her flesh, like all stigmatics (cf. the movie "STIGMATA"). Her adoptive mother found her lying on the ground, her back bloody and striped by the marks of a lash. Thenceforth Gemma Galgani would relive Christ’s Passion every Thursday from 10:00 p.m. to Friday at 3:00 p.m.
Theologians have a tendency to compare the saints among themselves and discuss their merits and respective powers (a little like sports cars), and we cannot help noting the marked similarities between Gemma Galgani (a Ferrari...of course) and Theresa of Lisieux. Both of them, with a simplicity and a candor that would make a hangman cry, scaled the steps of Saint Peter’s of Rome at lightning speed: Gemma died at the age of twenty-five and Theresa at twenty-four (when Gemma was nineteen). The Carmelite did not bear the signature of Christ, but Gemma, although a laywoman, participated of her own will in the Passion, the open door to the most amazing graces. Other than levitation and communication at a distance, Gemma Galgani could also "see" her guardian Angel and talked regularly with him during her lifetime.
Some consider Gemma Galgani a minor mystic, doubtless because she "saw nothing" like Hildegarde von Bingen and because she was neither a gifted tertiary Dominican, nor a Carmelite in ecstasy, nor a troubled Franciscan, but simply a stigmatic laywoman. Yet in her memoirs we find passages that inevitably make us think of the more than disconcerting ecstasies of Marguerite-Marie Alacoque, of Angela de Foligno or of Maria-Magdalena dei Pazzi. Even though a laywoman, this splendid virgin was canonized only thirty-seven years after her death. Because of various supernatural signs and inexplicable healings, Rome became interested in her case in 1917 and she was proclaimed a saint on March 26, 1936.
Since then, her face continues to fascinate multitudes, a bit like the enigmatic Great Garbo’s. From the book "An inquiry into the existence of guardian angels".
