투스카니의 산 제미니아노 옛마을에서 특별한 공경을 받고 있는 산따 피나는 몰락한 어느 가정에서 태어났다.

어릴 때의 그녀는 매혹적인 모습으로 귀여움을 독차지 하였다.

그러나 마음이 착해서 자신의 어려운 처지에서도 적은 음식조차 반을 나누어 남을 주곤 하였다.

 

그는 집에서 은수자처럼 살았는데, 낮에는 수예 등으로 가사를 돕고 밤에는 기도에만 전념하였다.

그녀가 아직 처녀일 때 부친이 죽었는데 그녀 역시 중병에 걸리고 말았다.

중병 증세가 있었고, 좋은 얼굴이 망가져서 추한 여성으로 변하였던 것이다.

 

그녀는 그 후 16년 동안이나 한자리에 누워서 고통을 앓았지만

조금도 불평하지 않고 오로지 "나의 상처보다 그리스도의 상처"가 더 마음 아프다고 말할 뿐이었다.

 

그후 그녀는 자신이 늘 공경하던 성 그레고리오(대)의 발현을 보았고,

"사랑하는 딸아,  하느님께서 너에게 안식을 주시리라"는 말씀을 들었다.

 

 

1253년 3월 12일, 그녀는 환시에서 들은 바로 그날에 운명하니,

그녀의 무덤에서는 매일같이 기적이 일어나서 그녀의 높은 성덕을 꽃으로 정하고 서로 나누어 갖는다.

그녀는 뛰어난 금발의 미녀였다.

소녀 피나는 모든 고향사람들의 칭찬과 사랑을 받았다.

어느날 그녀는 알지 못하는 사람에게서 오렌지를 선물을 받았다.

이 사실을 안 모친은 피나를 나무라면서 죽음에 이르도록 구타했다.

 

그런데 그녀의 장례식날이었다.

그날 많은 기적이 일어났는데 그중에 지금까지 전해 내려오는 기적은

그 고장 언덕에 난데없이 계절도 아닌데 꽃이 만발했다고 한다.

Born poor, and through she stayed that way, she still found ways to help those in worse shape that herself. A pretty girl, she lived as a hermit in her home, doing chores, giving to the poor when she could, spinning, sewing, and praying through the nights. Her father died when she was very young. Soon after, she was stricken with a condition that made any movement painful; she had to be carried everywhere on a board. She lived the rest of her life in constant suffering, and neglect, which she turned over to God in her constant prayers. Never joined an order but lived her life under Benedictine rule. Devoted to Saint Gregory the Great who suffered from a condition like hers. She received a vision from Saint Gregory who foretold the date of her death.

ST. FINA (SERAPHINA)

 

 

Fina was born in a little Italian town called San Geminiano. Her parents had once been well off, but misfortune had left them poor. Seraphina, or Fina, as her family called her, was their daughter. Fina was pretty and lively. She had a generous nature. Each day she saved half of her dinner for someone in the town poorer than she. During the day she sewed and spun cloth to help pay the family debts. At night, she usually spent a long time praying to Jesus and Mary.

When she was still quite young, her father died. Fina was struck with an illness that deformed and paralyzed her. Movement became almost impossible and Fina lay for six years on wooden planks. Pain rushed through her whole body. The only way she could bear it was to concentrate on Jesus as he was nailed to the cross. "I unite my sufferings to yours, Jesus," she would whisper. Sometimes, when the pain was horrible, she would say, "It is not my wounds but yours, O Christ, that hurt me." Fina was left alone for many hours every day because her mother had to go out to work or beg. The neighbors knew about Fina, but her sores had become so foul-smelling that people made excuses for not going to visit her.

Unexpectedly, Fina’s mother passed away. Now the girl was left alone. Only one neighbor, her good friend Beldia, came to care for her. Beldia tried to give Fina as much attention as she could, but Fina was usually left alone. It was obvious that she could not live much longer. She refused to lose heart. Someone mentioned to her about the tremendous sufferings St. Gregory the Great had endured. Fina became devoted to him. It is said that one day, as she groaned in pain, St. Gregory appeared to her. He said kindly, "Child, on my feast day God will grant you rest." His feast day in older calendars had been celebrated on March 12, because he had died on March 12, 604. So on March 12, 1253, St. Gregory came to take Fina home to heaven.

 

St. Fina helps us appreciate the Christian meaning and value of suffering. We can also realize the value of visiting shut-ins, the elderly, the ill. We can ask St. Fina to give us a sensitive heart for people who are lonely or suffering.

Nata nel 1238 da due nobili decaduti di San Gimignano, Iosefina (Fina) mori giovanissima, 15enne, nel 1253. Colpita a dieci anni da una grave malattia che la immobilizzo, fu esempio di vita cristiana per chi la visitava. Il dolore della santa fu aumentato, oltretutto, dalla morte della madre. Al momento del trapasso di Fina le campane della citta suonarono senza che nessuno le azionasse, narra il suo biografo, il domenicano Giovanni del Coppo, attento piu alla devozione che alla storia. Il culto si diffuse subito anche per i molti miracoli avvenuti sulla tomba. Dichiarata patrona della cittadina toscana, in suo onore fu costruito un ospedale. Nel 1457 il Consiglio del Popolo decise la realizzazione di una splendida cappella nella collegiata. (Avv.)

 

Nata da Cambio ed Imperia, nobili decaduti, a san Gimignano nel 1238, Fina (abbreviazione di Iosefina) ebbe una vita breve, ma religiosamente molto intensa. A dieci anni di eta fu colpita da una gravissima malattia che la costrinse a letto impedendole qualsiasi movimento. Ad accrescere il dolore si aggiunse la perdita della madre.

Col corpo piagato diede ai visitatori esempio di pazienza, insegnando loro il culto della Passione del Signore e la devozione alla Regina dei martiri.

Si spense il 12 marzo 1253, festa di s. Gregorio Magno, di cui era devota e dal quale avrebbe avuto l’annuncio della morte; al momento del trapasso le campane di San Gimignano suonarono a festa senza che mano alcuna toccasse le corde. Questi particolari si trovano nella sua biografia scritta al principio del sec. XIV dal domenicano Giovanni del Coppo, piu con intenti pii e devoti che storici.

Il culto per s. Fina fu molto vivo fin dagli inizi anche per i numerosi miracoli che avvenivano al suo sepolcro. Fu eletta patrona della citta; in suo onore fu costruito un ospedale; nel 1457 il Consiglio del Popolo delibero la costruzione della magnifica cappella che si puo ancora ammirare nella collegiata.
