강론 말씀 중에 단 한 번의 실수도 없이 그리스도의 복음을 전해 주시는, 대단히 좋은 Donald Wuerl 추기경의 강론 말씀은, 그리 어려운 내용은 담고 있지 않아, 저로서도 매우 편하게 잘 들었습니다만, 그러나 Garvey 총장의 취임식 연설문은 말씀 중에 인용하면서 다루는 문헌들의 범위가 상당히 폭이 넓어 저로서도 그 내용을 바로 들으면서 전부를 이해할 수가 없었는데, 마침 취임식 연설문 전문을 올려 주었으므로, 모두가 자세하게 그 내용을 알 수 있게 되었다는 생각입니다.

재작년으로 기억합니다만, 과거에 교황청 베드로 대성당에서 베네딕토 16세 교황님께서 집전하셨던 예수 성탄 대축일 장엄 미사 실황을 EWTN-TV 제공으로 청취하면서 또한 녹화하여, 이후에 별도의 시간을 내어 다시 청취하면서 녹취록을 만드는 작업을 한 적이 있었습니다만, 이번에는 제가 굳이 3시간짜리 동영상을 다시 들으면서 강론 말씀 및 총장 취임식 연설문의 녹취록들을 작성하지 않아도 되도록, 이러한 자료들을 즉시 제공해 주시는 미국 가톨릭 대학교 당국에 깊이 감사드립니다.

Garvey 총장의 취임 연설문을 들으면서 첫 번째로, 많이 부족한 제가 느낀 점은, Garvey 총장께서 성 토마스 아퀴나스(St. Thomas Aquinas)의 신학 대전(Summa Theologica)에 어떠한 내용들이 담겨 있는지를 훤히 꿰뚫고 계신다는 점이었습니다. 따라서 당연히 아리스토텔레스 철학도 꿰뚫고 있다는 생각이며, 세 번째 평신도 총장인 이번의 신임 Garvey 총장께서 제시한 주제가 "지성과 덕(Intellect and Virtue)"인 것도 결코 이와 무관하지 않다는 생각입니다.

비록 (어제 날짜인) 성 바오로 회심 축일(Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul, the apostle) 기념 미사 및 이어지는 제15대 미국 가톨릭 대학교 총장 John Garvey(1948년생)의 충성 서약 및 취임식 동영상은 3시간 정도 지속되나, 영어 청취가 가능하신 분들께서는 모두 청취하실 것을 강력하게 권장합니다.

또한 꼭 같은 신앙을 고백하는 가톨릭 신자로서, 우리의 자녀들에게 초등학교, 중,고등학교 교육 과정에서, 장차 (미국 가톨릭 대학교 등과 같은) 가톨릭 신앙 안에 머물러 있는 대학교에 진학하여 학업을 잘 수행할 수 있도록, 얼마나 제대로 된 신앙 교육을 시키고 있는지에 대하여, 크게 반성하지 않을 수 없는 것이 국내의 교육 현장이기에, 깊은 탄식과 함께 많은 것을 생각하게 하였습니다.

위에 안내해 드린 내용들에 대하여, 아직은 저도 다 읽지를 못하였습니다만, Garvey 총장께서 제시한 주제를 중심으로 올려진 자료들을 학습하도록 하겠습니다. 관심이 있으신 교우님들께서도 이들 자료들을 또한 함께 읽고, 그리고 특히 신앙 교육과 관련하여 국내의 청소년들이 직면하고 있는 현실에 대하여 많은 숙고가 있으셨으면 좋겠습니다.

다음은 Garvey 총장이 취임식 중에 언급한, 자신의 청년 시절에 어머니와 나눈 대화와 그리고 이 대화에 대한 보충 설명입니다:

I have been arguing that the arrow between intellect and virtue travels in a different direction than scholars sometimes suppose. That the cultivation of virtue prepares the ground for the work of the intellect, because “virtue makes us aim at the right mark.” Let me give one more example. When we went off to college my mother would say, after the fashion of St. Monica, “Don’t forget your prayers.” After I got out of law school she came to visit me in New York, and I told her about a book I had just read (by J.N.D. Kelly, as I recall) on early Christian doctrine. I asked if she knew that the words “light from light” that we recited in the Nicene Creed were meant to resolve the Arian heresy about the relation between God the Father and God the Son. She said, “Dear, the important thing is not that you understand it. The important thing is that you believe it.”

The older I get the more I find that my mother was right. I don’t mean to embrace the full import of her observation. The Council of Nicea was really important, and it met to iron this out. But Mother was giving me the same advice she had when I went off to college: the most important thing is to say your prayers before you go off on your intellectual wanderings. Pascal said precisely the same thing in the Pensées, after describing the reasonableness of his wager:

The external must be joined to the internal to obtain anything from God, that is to say, we must kneel, pray with the lips, etc., in order that proud man, who would not submit himself to God, may be now subject to the creature. . . . [C]ustom . . . without violence, without art, without argument, makes us believe things and inclines all our powers to this belief, so that our soul falls naturally into it.

Mother, St. Monica, and Pascal were all saying that the path to the study of theology begins with prayer, not speculation. Or to return to the reflections of Pope Benedict, “the true apology of Christian faith, the most convincing demonstration of its truth against every denial, are the saints, and the beauty that the faith has generated.”
