보헤미아 태생인 그는 1836년에 뉴욕에서 사제로 서품되었고, 그 후 속죄회에 입회하였다.

1852년에는 필라델피아의 제 4대 주교로 축성되었는데, 그는 가톨릭 학교를 교구 체제로 설립한 공로가 크다.

존 네포뮤센 노이먼 주교는 1811년 보헤미아에서 출생하여 버드와이스의 신학교에서 신학을 공부하였다.

특별히 미국에서 국외자로 살고 있는 이민자들에게 그리스도의 사랑을 전하기 위해 스스로 이민을 가기로 결심하였다.

그가 처한 어려움은 매우 컸으나 거의 24년 동안 전 미국지역에서 구속주회 선교사로서 사목활동에 전념하였다.

필라델피아의 주교로 있을 때 ’필라델피아의 프란치스코 제3회’라는 여자 수도회를 설립하였다.

1860년 1월 5일 그는 거리에서 쓰러져 곧 세상을 떠났다. 1977년 6월 19일 교황 바오로 6세에 의해 시성되었다.(구속주회홈에서)

돈이 얼마나 있으면 만족할 수 있을까?

어떤 연구 결과에 의하면, 만족 지점은 대개 지금 가지고 있는 것보다 약간 더 높은 곳에 있다고 한다.

필라델피아 교구의 네 번째 주교였던 요한 뉴먼은 그런 욕망의 맹점에 대해서 잘 알고 있었기에

말 그대로 자신이 소유한 모든 것을 포기하고 청빈의 삶을 살기로 서약했다.

 

한번은 그의 집무실에서 신발이 젖어 있는데도 계속 신고 있는 것을 보고 누군가 그에게 신발을 바꿔 신으라고 말했다.

그러자 그는 “꼭 신발을 바꿔 신어야 한다면 왼쪽 신발은 오른쪽에, 오른쪽 신발은 왼쪽에 신을 수밖에 없을걸.”이라고 대답했다.

신발이라고는 한 켤레밖에 없었기 때문이었다.

 

요한 뉴먼이 죽자 사람들이 그에게 새 양복을 입혔는데 그것이 그가 처음 입어 보는 새 양복이었다고 한다.

그가 궁핍을 좋아했기 때문에 가난하게 산 것은 아니었다.

진정 가치 있는 것은 결코 돈으로 살 수 없다는 것을 알았기 때문에 청빈을 선택한 것이다.

만일 자기가 소유하고 있는 재물로 자신의 가치를 평가한다면 자기가 부자라고 자부할 만한 사람은 많지 않을 것이다.

 

그러나 하느님은 가진 것으로 우리를 평가하지 않으시고 우리의 존재 자체로 그 가치를 인정하신다.

그것을 깨닫는 순간 비로소 우리는 참 부자가 될 수 있다. 내가 버는 돈이 나 자신에 대한 생각에 어떤 영향을 미치는가?

나는 내가 가진 돈에 따라 판단될 수 없다. 어떤 상황에서도 나는 풍요롭게 살 수 있다.

지극히 거룩한 구속주 수도회

Congregatio Sactissimi Redemptoris

공식 명칭은 지극히 거룩한 구속주회 입니다.

 

라틴어로는 Congregatio Sanctissimi Redemptoris,

영어로는 Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer입니다.

한국에서는 이를 줄여서 ’구속주회’라고 부르고 있습니다.

 

구속주회

구속주회는 1732년 알폰소 마리아 데 리구오리(1696-1787, 주교,

윤리신학자이며 고해사제의 수호성인. 축일은 8월1일)성인에 의해 세워진

대표적인 활동 수도회로서 현재 약 6000여명의  회원들이 로마에 총원을 두고 78개국에서 활동하고 있습니다.

 

알폰소 성인은 1696년, 나폴리의 귀족 가문에서 태어나 어릴 때부터 뛰어난 재능을 보여 이미 16세에 법학박사 학위를 가진 실패를 모르는 법률가였습니다.

그러나 가난한 사람들에 대한 사랑 때문에 법관으로서의 영화를 버리고 사제로서의 삶을 택하였습니다(1726).

열정적인 사제였던 그는 도시의 모든 이들에게 하느님의 말씀을 전하였습니다.

그러던 어느 날 도시의 바깥 산기슭에서 양치는 가난한 농부들을 만났을 때, 당시 나폴리에서 많은 사제가 있었음에도 불구하고

어느 누구 하나 도시 밖의 가난한 이들을 돌보지 않았음에 충격을 받았습니다. 그들은 하느님의 말씀조차 들어보지 못했던 것입니다.

바로 이들, 가장 가난하고 버림받은 사람들에게 그리스도의 복음을 전하기 위해 알폰소 성인은 구속주회를 창설하고,

"가난한 사람에게 가서 복음을 전하라"(루가 4,18) 하신 복음 말씀을 따라 나폴리의 서민과 가난한 이들을 돌보는 데 전념하였습니다.

 

오늘날 구속주회는 "가난한 사람들에게 하느님의 말씀을 설교함으로써 구속주이신 그리스도의 모범을 따르기 위해"(회헌 1항) 전세계에서 활동하고 있습니다.

특별히 본당에서의 신자 재교육과 영성지도,사제들과 수도자들의 영성지도와 피정지도,

그리고 기타 다양한 선교사업을 수행함으로써,그리스도의 구속사업에 동참하고 있습니다.

Son of Philip, who was German and owned a stocking factory, and Agnes Neumann who was Czech. John was a small and quiet boy with four sisters and a brother, and was named after Saint John Nepomucene. An excellent student, John early felt drawn to religious life. Seminarian at Budweis, Bohemia in 1813, he studied astronomy and botany in addition to theological topics. Studied theology at Charles Ferdinand University at Prague in 1833.

 

When time came for his ordination, the bishop was sick; the date for was never reset because Bohemia had an over-abundance of priests. John decided to go to America to ask for ordination and work with emigres. He walked most of the way to France, then took ship for America.

 

John arrived unannounced in Manhattan in 1836. Bishop John Dubois was happy to see him as there were 36 priests for the 200,000 Catholics in New York and New Jersey. John was ordained on 28 June 1836, and sent to Buffalo. There the parish priest, Father Pax, gave him the choice of the city of Buffalo or of the rural area; John chose the more difficult country area. He stayed in a small town with an unfinished church, and when it was completed, he moved to a town with a log church. There he built himself a small log cabin, rarely lit a fire, slept little, often lived on bread and water, and walked miles to visit farm after remote farm. John’s parishioners were from many lands and tongues, but John knew twelve languages, and worked with them all.

 

Joined the Redemptorists at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1840, taking his vows at Baltimore, Maryland in 1841, the first Redemptorist to do so in the United States. Home missionary in Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Rector of Saint Philomena church in Pittsburgh in 1844. Vice-regent and superior of the Redemptorists in America in 1847. Bishop of Philadelphia in 1852.

 

Built fifty churches and began building a cathedral. Opened almost one hundred schools, and the number of parochial school students in his diocese grew from 500 to 9,000. Wrote newspaper articles, two catechisms, and many works in German. First American man and first American bishop to be canonized.

Giovanni Nepomuceno Neumann nacque in Boemia nel 1811. Studio per diventare sacerdote, ma non vi riusci. Allora nel 1836 emigro negli Stati Uniti. A Manhattan fu ben accolto dal vescovo John Dubois che aveva solo 36 preti per gli Stati di New York e New Jersey. Due settimane dopo il suo arrivo fu ordinato e inviato a Buffalo, dove ebbe la cura della zona rurale. Per raggiungere tutte le anime a lui affidate, dormiva poco e spesso si nutriva solo di pane e acqua. Aderi all’ordine redentorista e nel 1852 divenne vescovo di Filadelfia dove edifico cinque chiese e inizio la costruzione della cattedrale. Si dedico ai giovani. Mori nel 1860 ed e santo dal 1977. Il suo secondo nome deriva da un santo del XIV secolo, detto Nepomuceno perche nativo di Nepomuc, in Boemia; cioe nella sua stessa regione di origine, che nell’Ottocento apparteneva all’Impero austro-ungarico. Giovanni e figlio di artigiani, che lo avviano agli studi classici, dai quali passa poi al seminario: prima a Budejovic e poi a Praga. A 24 anni e pronto per il sacerdozio, ma c’e un rinvio. Dalle lettere di san Paolo apostolo egli ha ricevuto la vocazione missionaria; poi, gli scritti di evangelizzatori suoi contemporanei gli hanno suggerito una precisa destinazione: il Nord dell’America. D’accordo con il suo vescovo di Praga, parte verso gli Stati Uniti nel febbraio 1836, e vi sbarca quattro mesi dopo, al tempo del presidente Andrew Jackson.

Monsignor John Dubois, allora vescovo di New York, lo ordina sacerdote e lo manda nel nord dello Stato, dove ci sono molti immigrati di origine tedesca. Giovanni si installa nella cittadina di Williamsville, e una casetta diventa il suo campo-base. Di li parte per visitare i villaggi sparsi: incontri, conoscenze, amicizie; qualche volta anche scontri e avversioni, piu una scoraggiante poverta di mezzi. Ma cosi egli si sente realizzato, vivendo alla maniera descritta da Paolo apostolo nella seconda lettera ai cristiani di Corinto: ≪Viaggi innumerevoli... pericoli nelle citta, pericoli nelle solitudini deserte..., nella fatica e nell’avversita, nella fame e nella sete≫. Una vita, pero, che con il tempo da i suoi frutti: le prime chiese qua e la, e con esse via via le scuole, i collegi per ragazzi soli, le opere della promozione sociale.

Nel 1842, Giovanni Neumann entra a far parte, con i voti pronunciati a Baltimora, dei Redentoristi, la congregazione fondata da sant’Alfonso de’ Liguori. Nel 1852 viene nominato vescovo di Filadelfia. E questa e una felicissima scelta di papa Pio IX: sarebbe difficile trovare chi meglio di lui sappia guidare i sacerdoti con l’esempio personale. Ma non ha doti di amministratore, e percio gli viene affiancato un coadiutore, monsignor Giacomo Federico Wood, davvero esperto in questo campo, ma anche uomo di qualche ambizione. Wood aiuta il vescovo, ma e anche un po’ smanioso di sostituirlo. C’e tutto quello che occorre per creare un conflitto, ma la reazione di monsignor Neumann e serenamente evangelica: affida a questo collaboratore la parte centrale della citta, e riserva a se il lavoro in periferia, nei piccoli centri e nelle case sparse della Pennsylvania.

Giovanni Neumann e uomo di dottrina, e scrive un catechismo che avra 21 edizioni, ma resta soprattutto un uomo di Dio in cammino verso gli altri uomini. E cosi muore: in cammino. Un malore improvviso, infatti, lo schianta in una via di Filadelfia. ≪Celebrate le esequie, la fama della sua santita comincio a diffondersi [...]. Dio infatti comprovava questa fama con i miracoli≫. Cosi ha detto di lui Paolo VI, il Pontefice che lo ha canonizzato nel 1977.
