교황 베네딕토 16세 2월 28일 사임

2013년 2월 10일 정오 교황 베네딕토 16세는 2월 28일 오후 8시에 건강상의 이유로 교황직을 사임한다고 발표하였다.
교회법 제332조 ②항은 ‘혹시라도 교황이 그의 임무를 사퇴하려면 유효 요건으로서 그 사퇴가 자유로이 이루어지고 올바로 표시되어야 하지만 아무한테서도 수리될 필요는 없다.’고 규정하고 있어 교황이 자유로이 사임을 할 수 있으며 역사적으로도 교황직을 사임을 한 교황이 있다.

교황은 2010년 독일 언론인 페터 제발트와의 인터뷰 형식으로 대화를 나눈 뒤 발표된 책 ‘세상의 빛: 교황, 교회, 그리고 시대의 징후’에서 “육체적, 정신적, 영적으로 교황 업무 수행이 어렵다고 느낄 경우 사임할 권리가 있다.”고 밝히고 ”육체적인 면에서 내가 교황 업무를 해낼 수 있을지 걱정되고 의문이 들기도 한다”고 말씀을 하기도 하였다.

1927년 4월 16일 독일에서 태어난 교황은 2005년 4월 19일 요한바오로 2세 교황에 이어 제265대 교황으로 선출되었다. 선출 당시 78세였다.
베네딕토 16세 교황은 사임발표문에서 사임 이후 후임 교황을 선출하기 위한 콘클라베가 소집될 것이며, 성모 마리아께서 새 교황을 선출하는 추기경들을 어머니의 사랑으로 도와주시길 간청하였다. 또한 앞으로 남은 인생을 교회에 헌신하겠다고 밝혔다.

교황이 선종을 하거나 사임으로 교황좌가 공석일 경우 선출권을 가진 추기경이 바티칸에 모여 후임 교황을 선출하는 콘클라베를 개최한다. 현재 선출권을 가진 80세 미만의 추기경은 전체 209명 가운데 118명이다.

다음은 교황 사임에 대한 전문이다.

Dear Brothers,

I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me. For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.

Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer.
