There are two kinds of people on earth today;

Just two kinds of people, no more, I say.

Not the sinner and saint, for it’s well understood,

The good are half bad, and the bad are half good.

Not the rich and the poor, for to rate a man’s wealth,

You must first know the state of his conscience and health.

Not the humble and proud, for in life’s little span,

Who puts on vain airs, is not counted a man.

Not the happy and sad, for the swift flying years

Bring each man his laughter and each man his tears.

No; the two kinds of people on earth I mean,

Are the people who lift, and the people who lean.

Wherever you go, you will find the earth’s masses,

Are always divided in just these two classes.

And oddly enough, you will find too, I ween,

There’s only one lifter to twenty who lean.

오늘날 세상엔 두 부류의 사람이 있지요.

오로지 두 부류의 사람밖에 더는 없어요.

죄인과 성자는 아니에요. 잘 아시다시피

좋은 이에게도 나쁜 점이, 나쁜 이에게도 착한 데가 있으니까요.

부자와 가난뱅이도 아니죠. 재산을 평가하려면

양심과 건강 상태를 먼저 알아야 하니까요.

겸손한 사람과 거만한 사람도 아니에요. 짧은 인생에서

뻐기면서 사는 사람을 어찌 사람으로 치겠어요

행복한 사람과 불행한 사람도 아니에요. 유수 같은 세월을 살며

저마다 웃을 때도 있고 눈물을 흘릴 때도 있잖아요

아니죠. 내가 말하는 이 세상 사람의 두 부류란

짐을 덜어주는 사람과 짐을 지우는 사람입니다.

당신은 어딜 가든 보게 될 거예요, 세상 대중들이

늘 이 두 부류로 나눠진다는 걸

또 기이한 일이지만, 내 생각엔

짐을 지우는 사람이 스무 명이라면 짐을 덜어주는 사람은 한 사람뿐이에요
