말씀하신 대로 예수님의 새 계명인 '서로 사랑하라'는 성덕의 핵심이며, 그 사랑의 대상이 '작은 이'라는 점에 깊이 공감합니다. 구역모임을 통한 실천적 사랑의 제안도 매우 귀하고 아름다운 생각입니다.

다만 저는 미국에 살고 있어 한국 교회 현실과 다소 다른 시각을 가질 수 있음을 먼저 양해 부탁드립니다. 그 전제 아래 솔직하게 나눕니다.

첫째, 구역모임 방식은 자칫 획일적인 틀에 갇힐 수 있다는 우려가 있습니다. 신자들의 영성적 필요와 삶의 환경은 저마다 다르기에, 하나의 형식으로 모든 이를 담기엔 한계가 있을 수 있습니다.

둘째, 한국 교회는 오랫동안 구역 중심의 공동체 구조를 유지해 왔는데, 그 안에서 신앙이 형식화되거나 친목 위주로 흘러가는 경향이 없지 않았습니다. 이 점에서 저는 구역 중심 방식에 비판적인 시각도 함께 가지고 있습니다.

셋째, 구역모임은 교회의 정해진 지침과 순서에 따라 운영되는 구조적 특성이 있습니다. 제가 꿈꾸는 모임은 그보다 훨씬 자유롭고 능동적이며, 오직 성덕이라는 하나의 목표를 향해 신자들이 자발적으로 모이는 성격의 공동체입니다.

넷째, 구역모임은 신앙생활의 훌륭한 출발점이 될 수 있고, 레지오나 꾸르실료 같은 단체들도 마찬가지입니다. 그러나 제가 나눈 공동체의 구상은 그 단계를 넘어서, 성인이 되는 것을 명시적 목표로 삼고 보다 깊은 영성 수련을 지향하는 모임입니다. 기존 모임들을 대체하는 것이 아니라 그 위에 세워지는 또 다른 차원의 공동체입니다. 그 점에서 두 모임은 근본적으로 성격이 다릅니다.

I wholeheartedly agree that the new commandment Jesus gave us — "Love one another as I have loved you" — is at the very heart of holiness, and that the recipients of that love are above all "the lㅏㅂㄱeast of these." Your suggestion of putting that love into practice through neighborhood group meetings is a beautiful and deeply meaningful idea.

That said, I live in the United States, and I recognize that my perspective may not fully reflect the realities of the Church in Korea. With that understanding, I would like to share my thoughts honestly.

First, I do have some concern that the neighborhood group format can become overly uniform. Since each person's spiritual needs and life circumstances are different, there may be inherent limitations in trying to gather everyone under a single structured form.

Second, the Korean Church has long maintained a community structure centered on neighborhood groups, and it is fair to say that within that structure, faith life has at times become formulaic or drifted toward social fellowship rather than genuine spiritual growth. This is a perspective I hold with some critical concern.

Third, neighborhood groups operate according to set guidelines and a fixed order established by the Church. The community I envision is far freer and more active than that — a gathering where the faithful come together voluntarily, united by a single shared goal of holiness. In that sense, the two are fundamentally different in nature.

Fourth, neighborhood groups can certainly serve as a wonderful starting point for faith life, as can communities like the Legion of Mary or Cursillo. However, the community I have in mind goes beyond that stage — it is a gathering explicitly aimed at becoming saints, oriented toward deeper spiritual formation and growth. It is not meant to replace existing communities, but to build upon them as a different and higher dimension of communal life.
