The Permanent Diaconate Has Its Place in U.S. Parishes, but Not in Korean Immigrant Churches?!
The permanent diaconate serves clear public functions within many U.S. Roman Catholic parishes: assisting in liturgy, supporting charitable outreach, and helping with parish administration. In large parishes with extensive social ministries, deacons can be an indispensable part of parish life. That reality deserves recognition.
Yet transplanting the U.S. model of the permanent diaconate into Korean immigrant Roman Catholic communities is unnecessary and can be counterproductive. Korean parishes in the United States differ from mainstream U.S. parishes in language, culture, and scale. Religious sisters, religious orders, and well-established volunteer networks already cover much of the educational, welfare, pastoral, and administrative work. For small to mid-sized Korean parishes, the costs and burdens of forming and maintaining a permanent diaconate yield little practical benefit.
Introducing the diaconate into these communities risks several harms. First, role duplication: functions already performed by sisters and volunteers may be fragmented. Second, financial and administrative strain: formation programs and ongoing support impose burdens on limited parish budgets. Third, cultural friction: institutional practices developed for large, English-speaking parishes may clash with the governance and pastoral rhythms of Korean congregations.
Practical alternatives are preferable. Strengthen formal collaboration with religious orders and sisters, professionalize parish administration where feasible, and invest in structured volunteer training. These measures preserve community autonomy and cultural identity while meeting pastoral and operational needs more efficiently.
In short, while the permanent diaconate has legitimate uses in many U.S. parishes, it is not a necessary or advisable import for Korean immigrant churches. Pastoral planning should be context-sensitive: adopt tools that fit the community’s real needs rather than imposing institutional forms by default. † 성부와 성자와 성령의 이름으로 아멘. |
