The Gift of Friendship
우정(友情·友愛·友誼)은 사람이 받을 수 있는 가장 큰 선물 가운데 하나입니다. 그것은 함께 하는 목표, 관심사 또는 역사를 넘어서는 끈끈한 유대 관계입니다. 그 관계는 성적인 결합에서 생길 수 있는 것보다 더 강력하고, 서로의 운명으로 다질 수 있는 것보다 더 깊으며, 심지어는 결혼이나 공동체에서 생기는 것보다 더 친밀한 겁니다. 비록 더 기쁘거나 덜 슬프게 할 순 없을지라도 우정은 그 기쁨과 슬픔 속에서 다른 이과 함께 있게 하는 겁니다. 사랑에 품위(高貴)와 진심(誠實)을 건내는 영혼의 일치가 바로 우정입니다. 우정을 통해 온 삶이 밝게 빛나는 겁니다. 행복하여라 ! 벗을 위해 제 목숨을 바치는 이들 !
The Gift of Friendship
JANUARY 7Friendship is one of the greatest gifts a human being can receive. It is a bond beyond common goals, common interests, or common histories. It is a bond stronger than sexual union can create, deeper than a shared fate can solidify, and even more intimate than the bonds of marriage or community. Friendship is being with the other in joy and sorrow, even when we cannot increase the joy or decrease the sorrow. It is a unity of souls that gives nobility and sincerity to love. Friendship makes all of life shine brightly. Blessed are those who lay down their lives for their friends.
