<감사라는 영성의 노력>
The Spiritual Work of Gratitude
우리 삶에서 일어나는 좋은 일들에 감사하는 것은 쉽지만 좋은 일이든 나쁜 일이든, 기쁨의 순간이나 슬픔의 순간이나, 성공이나 실패나, 보답이든 거절이든 삶 전체에 감사하려면 영성의 노력을 기울여야 합니다. 하지만 지금 이 순간까지 우리를 이끌어 준 모든 것에 감사할 수 있어야만 비로소 참으로 감사하는 사람이 되는 겁니다. 일이든 사람이든 기억하고 싶은 것과 잊고 싶은 것으로 우리 삶을 갈라놓는 한 우리의 온 존재가 감사드려야 할 하느님의 선물이라고 내세울 순 없는 겁니다.
지금 있는 자리로 이끌어 온 모든 것을 두려움 없이 바라보며 머지않아 그 안에서 사랑의 하느님께서 인도하시는 손길을 보게 될 것이라 믿어야 하는 겁니다.

To be grateful for the good things that happen in our lives is easy, but to be grateful for all of our lives-the good as well as the bad, the moments of joy as well as the moments of sorrow, the successes as well as the failures, the rewards as well as the rejections-that requires hard spiritual work. Still, we are only truly grateful people when we can say thank you to all that has brought us to the present moment. As long as we keep dividing our lives between events and people we would like to remember and those we would rather forget, we cannot claim the fullness of our beings as a gift of God to be grateful for.
Let’s not be afraid to look at everything that has brought us to where we are now and trust that we will soon see in it the guiding hand of a loving God.
