Spiritual Dryness

영성생활을 해 나가는 데 종종 엄청난 메마름을 겪곤합니다. 기도드릴 마음이 내키지 않고, 하느님께서 계신다는 걸 체험하지 못합니다. 또 전례도 지루하고, 심지어는 하느님과 예수님과 성령님에 대해 믿었던 모든 게 어릴 적의 옛날 이야기에 지나지 않는다는 생각마저 드는 겁니다.

이럴 때 중요한 건 대개 이런 느낌과 생각들이 그냥 느낌과 생각에 지나지 않는거고 또 하느님의 성령님께서는 우리가 느끼고 생각하는 그 너머에 계시다는 걸 깨닫는 겁니다. 하느님께서 계시다는 걸 느낌과 생각으로 체험할 수 있는 건 엄청난 은총이지만, 그럴 수 없다고 해서 하느님께서 계시지 않는다는 뜻은 아닙니다. 오히려 하느님께서 우리에게 더 큰 믿음을 가지라고 종종 청하신다는 걸 뜻하는 겁니다. 바로 영성이 메마른 때야말로 우리가 영성수련을 단단히 함으로써 하느님께 새롭게 더 가까이 다갈 수 있는 겁니다.

"하느님, 당신은 저의 하느님, 저는 당신을 찾습니다. 제 영혼이 당신을 목말라합니다. 물기 없이 마르고 메마른 땅에서 이 몸이 당신을 애타게 그립니다."(시편63,2)

Spiritual Dryness

Sometimes we experience a terrible dryness in our spiritual life. We feel no desire to pray, don’t experience God’s presence, get bored with worship
services, and even think that everything we ever believed about God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit is little more than a childhood fairy tale.

Then it is important to realise that most of these feelings and thoughts are just feelings and thoughts, and that the Spirit of God dwells beyond our feelings and thoughts. It is a great grace to be able to experience God’s presence in our feelings and thoughts, but when we don’t, it does not mean that God is absent. It often means that God is calling us to a greater faithfulness. It is precisely in times of spiritual dryness that we must hold on to our spiritual discipline so that we can grow into new intimacy with God.

"O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water." - Psalm 63: 1 (NIV)
