2022-05-06 ㅣ No.154904 헨리 나웬 신부님(1932.1.24-1996.9.21)의 오! 그리고 늘! 5월 6일 <쟁여놓으려는 마음에 끌린다는 것> The Temptation to Hoard 늘 두려움을 지고 사는 우리는 이런 마음가짐을 갖기 십상입니다. “모든 이가 먹기엔 음식이 넉넉하지 않으니 비상시를 대비해 내 거라도 확실히 쟁여놓는 게 낫겠어요.” 또는 “모든 이가 활용할만한 지식으론 모자라니 내가 아는 건 나만 알고 아무도 그걸 활용하지 못하게 하는 게 좋겠어요.” 또는 “모든 이에게 베풀기엔 사랑이 넉넉치 않으니 내 친구라도 붙잡아 두고 남들이 못 데려가게 하는 게 낫겠어요.” 이게 바로 쪼들리는 정신자세입니다. 그 때문에 우리는 살아남기엔 충분치 않을 거라는 두려움에서 가진 걸 쟁여놓게 되는 겁니다. 하지만 비극은 바로 꼭 끌어안고 움켜쥐던 게 결국은 제 손안에서 썩어문들어진다는 겁니다. "돈을 사랑하는 자는 돈으로 만족하지 못하고 큰 재물을 사랑하는 자는 수확으로 만족하지 못하니 이 또한 허무이다. 재산이 많으면 그것을 먹어 치우는 자들도 많다. 눈으로 그것을 바라보는 것밖에 그 주인에게 무슨 소용이 있으랴? 적게 먹든 많이 먹든 노동자의 잠은 달콤하다. 그러나 부자의 배부름은 잠을 못 이루게 한다. 고통스러운 불행이 있으니 나는 태양 아래에서 보았다, 부자가 간직하던 재산이 그의 불행이 되는 것을 좋지 못한 사업으로 그 재산이 없어지면 부자가 아들을 낳아도 그 아들 손에는 아무것도 남지 않는다. 어머니 배에서 나온 것처럼 그렇게 알몸으로 되돌아간다. 제 노고의 대가로 손에 들고 갈 수 있는 것은 전혀 지니지 못한 채."(코헬15,9-14) The Temptation to Hoard MAY 6 As fearful people we are inclined to develop a mind-set that makes us say: “There’s not enough food for everyone, so I better be sure I save enough for myself in case of emergency,” or “There’s not enough knowledge for everyone to enjoy; so I’d better keep my knowledge to myself, so no one else will use it” or “There’s not enough love to give to everybody, so I’d better keep my friends for myself to prevent others from taking them away from me.” This is a scarcity mentality. It involves hoarding whatever we have, fearful that we won’t have enough to survive. The tragedy, however, is that what you cling to ends up rotting in your hands. "Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless. As goods increase, so do those who consume them. And what benefit are they to the owners except to feast their eyes on them? The sleep of a laborer is sweet, whether he eats little or much, but the abundance of the rich permits them no sleep. I have seen a grievous evil under the sun: wealth hoarded to the harm of its owner, or wealth lost through some misfortune, so that when there are children there is nothing left for them. Naked they come from their mother's womb, and as they come, they depart; they take nothing from their labor that they can carry in their hands." - Ecclesiastes 5: 9-14 (NIV) † 성부와 성자와 성령의 이름으로 아멘.
