Cornet-Cornet[코넷]
트럼펫과 비슷하게 생긴 금관 악기. 19세기 중엽 프랑스에서 만든 것으로, 소리를 조절하는 세 개의 판(瓣)이 있으며, 트럼펫의 원형(圓形)에 가까운 악기로 음색이 부드럽다.
코르네타. 트럼펫과 비슷한 악기로 음색도 비슷한데 관이 다소 짧아 더 경쾌하게 조작할 수 있음. 베를리오즈, 비제, 롯시니 등의 프랑스, 이탈리아 작곡가들이 즐겨 사용했다.
놋쇠로 만든 악기로 피스톤에 의한 관장(管長)변화장치가 달려 있으며 모양이 트럼펫과 흡사하고 음색도 비슷하다. 트럼펫과 같은 화려함은 없으나 친밀감이 가는 음질을 지녔으며 초보자가 다루기는 트럼펫보다 쉽다. 연주기법의 경쾌함으로 오랜 역사를 가진 트럼펫의 자리를 빼앗아 19세기 후반부터 제1차 세계대전 후 새로운 형의 트럼펫이 나타날 때까지 약 반 세기 동안에 걸쳐 널리 애용되었다. L.H.베를리오즈, G.비제, G.로시니, I.F.스트라빈스키 등은 이 악기를 위한 작품을 많이 남겼다.
오늘날 오케스트라에서 쓰이는 일은 적고 주로 브라스밴드에서 쓰인다. 관(管)의 길이는 여러 가지가 있으나 가장 일반적이고 기준적인 것은 B♭관이며 관을 바꾸어 같은 악기를 A관과 그 밖의 것으로 바꿀 수도 있다. C관 이외는 이조악기(移調樂器)가 된다. 한편 15∼18세기에 걸쳐 사용된 코르넷이라고 하는 악기는 이와는 다른 것이다. 즉 직관(直管) ·C형 ·S형 등으로 만든 목제(木製) 또는 상아제(象牙製)의 악기로 이는 관 옆의 구멍을 손가락으로 개폐(開閉)하여 음높이를 조절하였다. 음이 부드럽고 현악기나 사람 목소리와의 앙상블에 적합하였으며 소프라노관(管)이나 테너관도 있었다. 베이스의 코르넷은 손가락이 닿기 쉽도록 S형으로 굽어 있었기 때문에 세르팡(뱀)이라고 하여 저음용 악기로 쓰였다.

코넷 [cornet]
1820년대에 대륙의 포스트 호른(cornetde-poste : 둥글게 말린 형태로 프렌치 호른과 비슷한 모양)에 밸브를 달아 개발한 금관악기.
1828년 파리의 장 아스테(Halary라고도 함)가 처음 만들었다. 관은 전체적으로 원추형이지만, 3개의 밸브가 달린 부분부터 점점 좁아져 취구관(shank) 부분은 완전히 원통형으로 되어 있다. 취구관에는 본관과 붙였다 떼었다 할 수 있는 금속 마우스피스를 연결하는데, 가는 원통형의 취구관은 깔대기 모양의 깊은 마우스피스와 함께 부드러운 소리를 내게 하며 연주기술상의 유연성을 줌으로써 이 악기를 미국과 영국에서 중요한 악기로 부상하게 해주었다. B♭조로 조율하며 따라서 실제 소리보다 온음 위로 기보한다. 음역은 가온 다(C)음 아래 E음부터 가온 다(C)음 위 B♭음까지이다. 브라스 밴드는 더 높은 음높이를 내는 E♭조 소프라노 코넷도 사용한다. B♭조 코넷 중 극장용으로 사용한 이전의 형태는 회전 밸브를 사용하여 A조로 변환시키기도 한다.
이 악기는 독주악기로 인기를 누리게 되었다. 초기의 기교 있는 연주자들은 호른 연주자 출신인데 변조관(crook : 관의 길이를 변경시켜 음높이를 바꾸는 보조관으로, 붙였다 떼었다 할 수 있음)을 바꾸어 달음으로써 조나 분위기를 바꿀 수 있었다. 길이가 긴 변조관은 기본 음높이를 E♭까지 올릴 수 있었을 뿐 아니라 어두운 음색을 냈다. 19세기의 유명한 영국의 독주자들로는 허만 쾨니히, 아이작 레비 등이 있다. 엑토르 베를리오즈(1803~69) 시대 이후 종종 트럼펫 대신 사용되거나, 프랑스의 관현악단에는 항상 포함되어왔으나 20세기에 들어와 개조된 트럼펫이 다시 애용되자 관현악단에서 밀려나게 되었다. 코넷은 근대 댄스 밴드나 재즈 밴드에서 트럼펫보다 먼저 사용된 악기였으나, 트럼펫의 사용이 증가되자 독주악기로서의 인기가 떨어졌다. 다만 브라스 밴드에서만 예외적으로 애용되고 있다.
코넷이 원래부터 가졌던 특성과 함께 밸브 달린 뷰글(플뤼겔호른)의 장점을 보완해 알트 호른(알토 호른), 바리톤 호른, 테너 호른 등 수많은 악기들이 개발되었다. 이 악기들은 비슷한 음역을 가진 다른 금관악기들을 나타내는 용어로도 사용되며, 나라마다 그 명칭이 다르다.

Phillip McCann
Phillip McCann is one of the best-known names in the Brass Band world. He was born in Bo'ness, Scotland, where he began his playing career with the Kinneil Colliery band at the age of eight. He held the position of principal comet with the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain for five years. At the age of fourteen he became principal comet with the Yorkshire Imperial Metals Band. Four years later he was persuaded to join the ranks of the Fairey Engineering Band as principal comet, advancing to the same position with the famous Men O' Brass. In 1973 he became principal comet of the world-famous Black Dyke Mills Band, and held that position until 1988.
He has toured extensively as a recitalist in Europe, the U.S.A., Japan Australia and New Zealand, and in this country he has played in all the prestigious venues together with radio broadcasts and appearances on television. Phillip is also busy in giving master classes with bands throughout the world. world. He is a member of the internationally renowned 'instrumentalists assisting the Yamaha Corporation in the development of their range of wind and brass instruments.
Phillip is heavily committed to teaching brass music through his work in the Music Department at The University of Huddersfield.
Although Phillip continues to be actively involved as a soloist and teacher, in recent years he has progressively increased his activities as a conductor, being the founder and Musical Director of the Sellers Engineering Band and, until recently, the Musical Director of the Britannia Building Society Band (formerly Foden's Motor Works) of Sandbach, Cheshire.
Phillip's recordings of The World's Most Beautiful Melodies are universally admired for the exquisite tone and musical expression in the playing, and are featured regularly on B.B.C.Radio, along with Classic FM.
His unique style and tone quality have been used by composers to combine with orchestra for film and T.V. soundtracks; such as Anna of the Five Towns, Woman of Substance and the immensely popular B.B.C. television series "Hetty Wainthropp Investigates" - the latter receiving an Ivor Novello Award in the category of Best Music Commissioned for a Broadcast Production.
