명동대성당

서울대교구 주교좌 명동대성당은 우리나라

최초의 본당이자 한국천주교회의 상징이다.

이곳에 신앙 공동체가 형성된 것은 1784년

명례방 종교집회에서 비롯된다. 이 후

1892년 코스트신부가 성당 설계에 착수하

였으며, 1898년 5월 29일, 한국교회의 주보

인 ‘무염시태의 마리아’ 를 주보로 하여 대성

당을 축성 봉헌하였다.

Myong-dong Cathedral

Myong-dong Cathedral, situated in the

heart of downtown Seoul, is both the

Cathedral Church for the Archdiocese

of Seoul and has become a symbol of

the presence of the Catholic Church in

Korea. In 1784 the first faith community

in Korea gathered in this place which

was then known as Myong-Nae-Bang.

In 1892, Father Coste began planning

for the construction of the church, and

on May 29, 1898, the Church was

consecrated with Our Lady of Immaculate

Conception as its patron.

1900년부터는 기해. 병인박해 때 순교한 분

들의 일부 유해를 받아 현재까지 지하성당에

모시고 있다. 1942년에는 최초의 한국인 주

임신부가 부임하였으며, 최초의 한국인 주교

노기남주교의 서품식이 거행되었다.

1945년에는 광복을 맞아 성당명을 종현대성당

에서 명동대성당으로 바꾸었다. 명동대성당은

1970, 80년대 근현대사의 격동기에 한국 사회

의 인권 신장 및 민주화의 성지로서의 역할을

했으며, 현재에는 기도하고 선교하는 공동체로

세상을 향하고 있다.

In 1900 the relics  of the martyrs who had

died in the persecutions of 1839 and 1866

were moved from Yong-san seminary to

the crypt in Myong-dong Cathedral.

In 1942 the first Korean parish priest,

Fr. Rhee Kijun, was appointed pastor of

Myong-dong, and the first Korean Bishop

Roh Kinam was consecrated and raised to

the episcopate there.  On Liberation Day,

1945, the name of the Cathedral was

changed from Chong-hyon to Myong-dong.

In the 1970's and 1980's, Myong-dong

Cathedral became a local point for the

democratic movement in Korea and has

played an important role in the expansion

of human rights. Currently, Myong-dong

Cathedral continues to reach out to the

global community with prayer and mission-

ary work.

명동대성당은 한국 초기의 벽돌조 성당이며

순수한 고딕 양식의 구조로 사적 제258호로

지정되어 있으며, 그 건물 양식으로도 하나의

교회사적 의미를 가진다. 대성당의 평면은 라

틴 십자가형 삼랑식이고 본당의 높이는 23m,

종탑의 높이는 45m 이며, 장식적 요소를 배

제한 순수 고딕 양식을 본떳다.

Myong-dong Cathedral is the first brick

church in Korea built in the Gothic style.

Designated as private treasure Number

258, the Myong-dong Cathedral has

significant historical value embedded in

its architecture. The floor plan of the

church is a Latin cross with an center

and two side aisles, and the roof of the

church is 23 meters in height. The bell

tower is 45 meters tall. The architecture

retains the pure Gothic style.
