9월 1일 예수님의 얼굴이 새겨져 있는 ‘베로니카의 베일’을 소장하고 있는 ‘예수님 얼굴 경당’을 방문하신 베네딕토 16세 교황님께선 “예수님을 볼 수 있으려면 순수한 마음과 올바른 행실을 해야 한다”고 말씀하셨다. 로마에서  동쪽으로 200km 떨어진 아브루초 지방에 위치한 만오펠로 경당을 방문하신 교황께선 성체 조배와 베로니카의 베일에 대한 경배 및 강론을 하시는 등 2시간 동안 머무르셨다.

교황께선 강론에서 “예수님과 영적 교류를 하고, 그의 모습에 대해 묵상하며, 형제들의 모습과 매일 매일의 일들에서 주님의 모습을 찾아 알아보기 위해서는 ‘께끝한 손과 순수한 마음’이 필요하다”고 말씀하셨다.

“무관심, 의심, 거짖 그리고 이기주의에서 벗어난 진실한 사랑으로 빛나는 께끝한 행실과 티 없이 순수한 마음, 신적 아름다움에 의해 황홀경에 차있는 그러한 마음이 필요한 것이다. 이러한 마음은 리지웨의 소화 데레사가 기도 중 예수님의 모습에 관해 말했던 “예수님의 모습이 각인된 그러한 마음이다,”고 성하께선 말씀하셨다.

계속해서 베네딕토 16세께선 우리 역시 “예수님의 얼굴로부터 발산되는 광채”에 의해 변화되어야 한다’고 말씀하셨다.

“기도 가운데서 사랑하는 마음으로 하느님에 관해 오래도록 묵상했던 하느님의 진정한 친구들인 성인들께선 이러한 변화를 체험하셨으며, 이들은 형제들 안에서, 특히 가장 가난하고 도움이 필요한 사람들 안에서 그들이 찾던 바로 그 하느님의 얼굴을 알아보고 이들을 사랑했다,”고 교황께선 말씀하셨다.

“하느님의 진정한 친구들인 이들 성인들은 우리가 용기를 가지고 본받아 야 할 바로 그러한 분들이다. 우리 역시 사랑의 길을 따르며, 모든 형제들과 매일 매일의 생활 안에서 예수님의 얼굴을 께달아 아는 충실한 삶을 해나갈 때, 시편이 노래하는 것처럼 하느님의 현존이 우리 안에 가득할 것이다,”고 성하께선 덧붙이셨다.

교황께선 이날 오전 10시 직전 헤리콥터로 로마에서 200km 떨어진 아브루조 지방의 작은 마을 만오펠로에 도착하셨으며, 폴테 대주교와 경당 책임자인 카푸치안 수도회 소속 칼미네 크치네리 신부 및 7,000명의 청중들은 흰색, 노랑색 스카프를 흔들며 성하를 환영했다.

폴테 대주교께선 베네딕토 16세께 아이콘 전문가 파스카리스 슈레머가 제작한 베로니카 베일에 새겨진 예수님 얼굴 복사판 성화상을 드렸는데, 슈레머는 토리노의 성의에 나타난 이미지가 베로니카의 베일의 이미지와 완전히 똑같음을 증명한 바 있다.

베로니카의 베일은 골고타 언덕을 향해 예수님이 나아가실 때 성녀 베로니카께서 예수님의 얼굴을 닦아주셨다는 천이다. 이 천에는 예수님의 시신을 쌌던 수의인 토리노의 성의에 나타난 예수님의 얼굴 모습과 같은 모습이 찍혀 있다고 전해지고 있으며 크기는 가로가 17cm, 세로 24cm이다. 또 이 베일에 나타난 이미지에는 예수님께서 눈을 뜨고 계시며 코밑 수염과 턱 수염도 나 있는데 연구 결과 사람이 그린 그림은 아닌 것으로 판명되었다.

또 로마 그레고리안 대학 성화상 및 기독교 미술사 교수이신 하인리히 파이퍼 신부님께서는 이 베로니카 베일에 나타난 예수님 이미지가 4세기 때 로마 지하묘지에 그려진 예수님 얼굴 모습을 비릇 예부터 예수님 얼굴 모습 표현의 모델이 되어왔다고 말씀하시고 있다.

단테의 신곡에서도 언급된 이 베로니카의 베일은 1297년 로마로 옮겨진 것으로 전해져 왔으며, 아브루초의 산악 마을인 만오펠로 주민들은 지금부터 500년 전 방랑하던 한 순례자가 이곳으로 가져왔다고 믿고 있으며, 이 사원은 최근 수개월 동안 이 베일에 대한 유명세 때문에 관광객들이 몰리는 인기 있는 명소가 되어 있다.

Seek Christ With Pure Hearts, Says Pope

Visits Shrine of Holy Face in Manoppello, Italy

MANOPPELLO, Italy, SEPT. 1, 2006 (Zenit.org).- One needs a pure heart and pure hands to see Christ, Benedict XVI said after a brief visit to the Shrine of the Holy Face in Manoppello, Italy.

The Pope made a two-hour personal pilgrimage today to the relic of what some say is Veronica's veil.

In an address after his visit, the Holy Father said: "To enter into communion with Christ and contemplate his face, to recognize the Lord's face in that of brothers and in everyday affairs, 'innocent hands and pure hearts' are necessary."

"Innocent hands, that is, live illuminated by the truth of love that overcomes indifference, doubt, falsehood and egoism; and, in addition, pure hearts are necessary, hearts ravished by divine beauty, as little Thérèse de Lisieux says in her prayer to the Holy Face, hearts that bear the imprint of the face of Christ," the Pontiff said.

Benedict XVI said that one must allow oneself to be transformed "by the radiance of his face."
"This is the experience of the true friends of God, the saints, who recognized and loved in their brothers, especially in the poorest and neediest, the face of that God long-contemplated with love in prayer," said the Pope

"They are for us encouraging examples to imitate; they assure us that if we journey with faithfulness in this life, on the way of love, we also -- as the psalmist sings -- will be filled with the presence of God," the Holy Father said.

At the end of his address, the Bishop of Rome appealed for respect for nature, "great gift of God which we can admire here gazing on the wonderful mountains that surround us."

"This gift, however, is increasingly exposed to serious risks of environmental degradation and, therefore, must be defended and protected," the Pontiff said on the day in which the Catholic Church in Italy observes the Safeguarding of Creation Day.

Benedict XVI arrived by helicopter shortly before 10 a.m. in the small town in the Abruzzo region of Italy, some 200 kilometers (124 miles) from Rome.

Archbishop Forte welcomed the Holy Father, along with the rector of the shrine, Capuchin Father Carmine Cucinelli and a crowd of 7,000, waving white and yellow scarves.

The Holy Father greeted the crowds on his way to the shrine, where he spent time in adoration before the Eucharist, venerated the relic and then delivered an address.

Archbishop Forte, theologian and member of the International Theological Commission, previously headed by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, gave the Pontiff an icon of the Holy Face by iconographer B. Pascalis Shlömer who has demonstrated that the image of the Holy Shroud of Turin coincides perfectly with the Holy Face of Manoppello.

The Capuchin fathers, to whom the shrine has been entrusted, gave the Pope a reproduction of the image of the relic.
