무신론과 유신론의 차이는 정신, 물질계 통틀어 모든 것의 근본 원인, 그들을 존재케 하고, 움직이게 하는 존재 근거, 궁극자를 인정하느냐, 마느냐이다. 이 같은 모든 것의 제일 원인, 궁극자, 모든 것을 존재하게 하는 존재 근거를 아리스토텔레스는 순수 현실태, 순수 형상, 부동의 원동자(Unmoved mover), 토마스 아키나스는 신(神)이라 했다. 역사이래 현재까지 수많은 형태의 유, 무신론들이 부침을 거듭하고 있지만 위의 사유의 기본 틀안에서 크게 벗어나지 않을 것이라 생각된다.

그런데 요 근래 현시대의 대표적 무신론자(atheist)가 유신론자(theist)으로 돌아서 전 세계 철학계의 흥미와 주목을 끌고 있다.

영국의 철학자 안토니 프르후(Antony Flew)가 바로 그 화제의 인물인데, 그는 반세기 이상 세계 철학계의 무신론 이론을 주도해왔다. 그런 그가 지난 12월 9일 공개된 “과학은 신을 발견했나? (Has Science Discovered God?)라는 한 학술 토론회 비디오 와 영국 현지로부터의 전화 인터뷰를 통해 그의 이 같은 사유의 전환을 확언했다.

수십 년 동안 신에 대한 믿음은 잘못된 거라 주장해오다 이제 81세가 된 안토니 프르후는 “일종의 지능을 가진 존재 혹은 모든 것의 제일 원인이 되는 존재가 우주를 창조했음이 틀림없다고 결론지었다. 그는 초지성적 존재만이 생명의 기원과 복잡한 자연의 구조를 잘 설명해 줄 수 있으며, 그의 신 존재에 대한 믿음은 과학적 사실에 바탕을 둔, 과학이 증거를 제시해주는 그러한 믿음”이라고 부연했다.

그로 하여금 신의 존재를 받아들일 수 밖에 없도록 한 신 존재의 과학적 근거의 예로서 그는, “생물학자들의 DNA 연구 결과를 볼 때, 생명 창조를 위해 필요한 DNA의 거의 믿을 수 없을 정도로 복잡하면서도 질서 정연한 배치는 지성적인 존재의 개입 없이는 이런 현상의 설명이 불가능함”을 들었다. 그는 또 최초 유기체의 증식으로부터의 진화를 설명하는 자연 진화 이론에 회의를 표하며, 최초 유기체는 누군가에 의해 창조되어야 보편 타당한 논리가 서는 이론이 된다는 생각을 보였다.

아리스토텔레스는 실재하는 이 세계의 모든 개체를 질료(matter)와 형상(form)의 결합으로 보고, 개체가 항상 서로 어울려 그 형상을 합목적적(合目的的)으로 실현시키는 것이 우주의 진상(眞相)이라고 하였으며, 어떠한 형상의 질료도 될 수 없는 제일(第一) 형상을 소위 부동(不動)의 원동자(原動者), 순수 현실태라, 토마스 아퀴나스는 이를 신이라하여 신(神)의 존재를 인정했다. 안토니 프르후의 생각은 존재론적으로 볼 때 바로 이 둘의 사유에서 벗어나는 것이 아니다.

그러나 프르후가 생각하는 신은 우리 기독교인들이 받아들이고 있는 신, 인간 세계에 깊이 개입하고 그 구성원들과 관계를 맺는 인격신은 아니고 “세계의 원리로서의 신, 철학적 원리로서의 신, 자연신관에서 언급될 수 있는 신 개념”으로서 예수님, 유일 인격신을 믿는 우리 신자들 입장에서는 충분히 만족스러운 신관은 아니다.

이 같은 안토니 프르후의 생각은 ‘자기는 인간사에는 실제로 개입하지 않는 그러한 신을 믿는 유신론자라 규정지을 수 있을 거라’는 그의 말에서 였볼 수 있다. 그는 또한 인격신관 뿐 아니라 사후 생 또한 부인하고 있는데 그의 이 같은 생각은 다음과 같은 그의 말에서 더욱 더 분명히 드러난다. '' 내가 생각하는 신은 무소불위의 힘을 휘두르는 동양의 전제적 폭군 혹은 사담 후세인 같은 우주적 횡포자와는 다르다. “내가 생각하는 신은 지성과 목적을 지닌 과학을 근거로 한 신적 존재다.”

그러나 어떻든 세계적인 무신론 이론가, 철학자인 안토니 프르후(Antony Flew)가 유신론으로 돌아섰다는 것은 흥미있는 일임에 틀림없으며 앞으로 철학계의 반응이 어떠할지 주목된다.

One of the world's leading atheists now believes in God, more or less

              NEW YORK _ A British philosophy professor who has been a leading champion of atheism for more than a half-century has changed his mind. He now believes in God _ more or less _ based on scientific evidence, and says so on a video released Thursday.

             At age 81, after decades of insisting belief is a mistake, Antony Flew has concluded that some sort of intelligence or first cause must have created the universe. A super-intelligence is the only good explanation for the origin of life and the complexity of nature, Flew said in a telephone interview from England.

             Flew said he's best labeled a theist like Thomas Jefferson, whose God was not actively involved in people's lives.

            ``I'm thinking of a God very different from the God of the Christian and far and away from the God of Islam, because both are depicted as omnipotent Oriental despots, cosmic Saddam Husseins,'' he said. ``It could be a person in the sense of a being that has intelligence and a purpose, I suppose.''

              Flew first made his mark with the 1950 article ``Theology and Falsification,'' based on a paper for the Socratic Club, a weekly Oxford religious forum led by writer and Christian thinker C.S. Lewis.

              Over the years, Flew proclaimed the lack of evidence for God while teaching at Oxford, Aberdeen, Keele, and Reading universities in Britain, in visits to numerous U.S. and Canadian campuses and in books, articles, lectures and debates.

              There was no one moment of change but a gradual conclusion over recent months for Flew, a spry man who still does not believe in an afterlife.

              Yet biologists' investigation of DNA ``has shown, by the almost unbelievable complexity of the arrangements which are needed to produce (life), that intelligence must have been involved,'' Flew says in the new video, ``Has Science Discovered God?

              The video draws from a New York discussion last May organized by author Roy Abraham Varghese's Institute for Metascientific Research in Garland, Texas. Participants were Flew; Varghese; Israeli physicist Gerald Schroeder, an Orthodox Jew; and Roman Catholic philosopher John Haldane of Scotland's University of St. Andrews.

              The first hint of Flew's turn was a letter to the August-September issue of Britain's Philosophy Now magazine. ``It has become inordinately difficult even to begin to think about constructing a naturalistic theory of the evolution of that first reproducing organism,'' he wrote.

            The letter commended arguments in Schroeder's ``The Hidden Face of God'' and ``The Wonder of the World'' by Varghese, an Eastern Rite Catholic layman.

              This week, Flew finished writing the first formal account of his new outlook for the introduction to a new edition of his ``God and Philosophy,'' scheduled for release next year by Prometheus Books.

              Prometheus specializes in skeptical thought, but if his belief upsets people, well ``that's too bad,'' Flew said. ``My whole life has been guided by the principle of Plato's Socrates: Follow the evidence, wherever it leads.''(AP)
