VATICAN CITY _ Pope John Paul II on Monday put lobbying against gay marriage at the top of the Vatican's agenda for 2005 and also urged politicians in prosperous nations to do more for the millions of hungry people around the globe in a yearly address, informally called as his "state of the world" message. In it, he urged world leaders to meet the challenges of promoting peace, defending life and feeding a scandalously hungry world.

In a speech to the diplomats accredited to the Vatican, the pontiff laid out the Roman Catholic church's priorities for the new year, making clear the ailing, 84-year-old pontiff intended to use his energies to tackle what he called ``challenges of life'' issues _ abortion, cloning, gay marriage, assisted procreation, and embryonic stem cell use.

Under the "challenge of life" section of his address, the Pope was unequivocal in his condemnation of abortion and genetic research involving embryos. "The Church's position, supported by reason and science, is clear: the human embryo is a subject identical to the human being which will be born at the term of its development.

"Consequently, whatever violates the integrity and the dignity of the embryo is ethically inadmissible," he said, adding this included any form of scientific research which treated the embryo "merely as a laboratory specimen".

The Catholic Church teaches that life begins at the moment of conception. It opposes stem cell research on embryos because they are destroyed in the process.

In an obvious reference to laws permitting marriage between homosexuals or equating the social rights of unwed couples to married ones, John Paul said that in some countries the family's ``natural structure'' has been challenged.

"Today the family is often threatened by social and cultural pressures which tend to undermine its stability; but in some countries the family is also threatened by legislation which --at times directly -- challenge its natural structure, which is and must necessarily be that of a union between a man and a woman founded on marriage," he said.
Calling the traditional family "the very sanctuary of life," the Pope said it was "a fundamental and irreplaceable condition" for raising children, for the well-being of society, and even for "the material prosperity of the nation."  Because of its role, the family "must never be undermined by laws based on a narrow and unnatural vision of man," he said.
Belgium and the Netherlands have legalised gay marriages, Spain and Canada are considering it. More than 4,000 gays were married in San Francisco last year but the marriages were later annulled by the state supreme court.

Speaking of world hunger, the leader of the world's one billion Catholics called for "a vast moral mobilisation of public opinion" to stop people from starving in a world that had abundant food for all.
"Hundreds of millions of human beings are suffering from grave malnutrition, and each year millions of children die of hunger or its effects," he said.

John Paul, who had vigorously opposed what the United States called ``preventive war,'' said in his speech that ``arrogance of power must be countered with reason, force with dialogue, pointed weapons with outstretched hands, evil with good.''
