교황청은 9월 18일 교황청 비밀 서고에 보관중인 비오11세 교황 재위 중 작성된 서류들을 학자들에게 공개했다. 공개된 수백만 점의 자료들 중에 한 일기장이 나왔는데 이 일기장은 비오 11세가 재위 후반기에 벌렸던 강력한 대 나치, 파시즘 운동을 기록하고 있다.

로마에 있는 교황청 라테랑 대학의 교회 역사학 교수인 필립 체녹스 교수는 서류 공개 시 이 일기장를 찾아 읽었으며, 일기엔 “나는 두려워 하지 않을 것이다. 이태리 독제 정권의 압력에 굴복하느니 차라리 자선을 구하겠다”는 비오 11세의 말씀이 인용되어 적혀있었다고 말했다. 이 일기장 내용은 1938년 9월 당시 교황청 외무성장이었으며 교황의 최 측근이었던 도메니코 탈디니 몬시놀이 당시 서구 유럽이 히틀러의 환심을 사려고 열었던 뮨헨 회의 몇 주를 앞두고 자신이 교황과 사적으로 나눈 대화를 토대로 작성한 것이다.

당시 무소리니 파시스트 정권은 이태리내 모든 신문들에게 교황청 기관지인 르오셀바토래 로마노에 실린 기사 인용 금지령을 내렸는데, 이 소식을 접한 교황께서 위의 “차리리 자선을 구하겠다----”는 말씀을 하셨다고 탈디니 몬시놀은 일기장에 적었다.

그간 학자들과 연구원들은 교황청 서고로부터 비오11세의 대 나치, 파시스트 반대 입장을 보여주는 자료들이 나오기를 기대해 왔는데 이번 일기장 내용의 공개로 비오 11세의 적극적인 대 나치, 파시즘 반대 입장이 입증되었다. 바티칸은 비오 12세 역시 신중한 외교 노력을 통해 수천명의 유대인 목숨을 구했다고 주장해오고 있다.

1922년부터 1939년 까지 재위했던 비오11세는 사실 교황직 초기에는 독일의 나치, 이태리의 파시스트 정권들이 방종적 자유주의와 공산주의에 맞서 국가, 가족의 전통적 가치를 지켜줄 것이라 믿어 이들 극우 정권들을 지지했었다.

그러나 1930년대 중반부터 교황은 자신의 건강이 악화되가고 있는 가운데 이들 정권의 유대인과 소수 민족에 대한 학대가 점점 커져감을 보고 이들 전체주의 정권들의 위험성을 께닫고 이들에 대한 반대 운동을 강화하셨다고 이 일기장을 검토한 또다른 학자인 로마에 있는 라 사피엔자 대학 현대 역사학 교수 에마 파토리니 교수는 말했다.

비오11세가 이처럼 자신들에 대한 반대 입장을 강화 하자 독일 나치스와 이태리 파시스트 정권은 교황이 미쳤다고 모략하기 까지 했다고 파토리니 교수는 말했다.

교황께선 뮨헨 회의를 앞두고 이 회의에 평화를 촉구하는 메시지를 바티칸 라디오를 통해 발표하셨으나 이 회의는 끝내 체코스로바키아 영토인 수데텐란드의 즉각적인 독일 합병을 승인했다고 파토리니는 말했다. 이후 1년도 안되 세계제2차대전이 발발했다.

비오11세 교황께선 또 인종주의와 폭력적인 독일 국수주의를 비난하는 회칙 작성을 시작하셨으나 끝내 발표하지 못하시고 돌아가셨다.

ROME _ A 1938 diary written near the end of Pius XI's papacy supplies fresh confirmation that the pope's opposition to Hitler and Benito Mussolini was hardening as the outbreak of World War II grew closer, a French historian said Tuesday after a first look at documents in the Vatican's just-opened secret archives.

```I won't be afraid. I prefer to beg for alms''' than to give into pressures from the Italian dictator's regime, Pius is quoted as saying in a diary kept by a top aide, according to the historian, Philippe Chenaux, who said he read the entry in the Vatican Secret Archives.

The diary was written by Monsignor Domenico Tardini, who served as Pius XI's foreign minister, and were based on Tardini's private conversations with the pontiff in September 1938, in the weeks running up to the Munich conference which went down in history as a symbol of Western Europe's futile attempt to appease Hitler.

The Vatican on Monday opened up to scholars millions of documents from the pontificate of Pius XI, which lasted from 1922 to February 1939.

Chenaux, who is a professor of church history at the Pontifical Lateranense University in Rome, and a biographer of wartime Pope Pius XII, said Tardini quoted Pius XI as uttering the alms quote after being informed that Mussolini's Fascist regime had prohibited Italian newspapers from reporting words from L'Osservatore Romano, the Vatican's official newspaper.

The diary indicated that Pius XI was determined to oppose the 1938 anti-Jewish laws enacted by Mussolini's regime.

Entries ``showed the great firmness of Pius XI. He wasn't afraid'' to oppose both Fascism and Nazism, Chenaux said in a telephone interview Tuesday evening from his home.

Many scholars and researchers had predicted that the opening of the archives on the pontificate would yield fresh evidence that the final days of the pontificate saw Pius XI, an Italian, take a harsher stance against the German and Italian regimes.

Initially, the pope had been supportive of far-right regimes, considering them a bulwark against liberal secularism and communism, which were viewed by the church as attacking traditional national and family values.

But by the mid-1930s, Pius had realized the dangers of totalitarianism, due to the growing persecution of Jews and minorities and due to his failing health, said Emma Fattorini, a contemporary history professor at Rome's La Sapienza University who is also studying the newly released files.

``When you are ill, it's easier to see the flaws of mortal things,'' Fattorini said by telephone. ``Of course, the Nazis and the Fascists used this against him (Pius XI), saying that he had gone mad.''

Tardini in September 1938 was in effect serving as the Vatican No. 2, because the Holy See's secretary of state, Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli, who would become Pius XII at Pius XI's death, had gone on vacation for a month, Chenaux said.

Chenaux said Pacelli had kept to his tradition of taking a month's holiday at a convent near Lake Constance, in Switzerland, despite the tensions leading to the Munich conference.

Pius XI made an appeal for peace in a message via Vatican Radio in connection with the Munich meeting, Chenaux noted.

The Munich pact permitted the immediate occupation by Germany of Sudetenland, Czechoslovakia. World War II began less than a year after its signing.

The archive is starting to yield insights into the Church's reactions to the growing persecution of Jews in Europe.

For years, the Vatican has struggled to defend Pius XII, who had served as a Vatican diplomat in Germany before becoming Pius XI's secretary of state, against claims he did not do enough to save Jews from the Holocaust.

Pius XI had commissioned an encyclical to denounce racism and the violent nationalism of Germany. But he died before releasing it, and it has never been made public.

Researchers said it could take months to study the 30,000 bundles of documents in the archives.

Three years ago, the Vatican made available documents from the offices of the papal nuncios in Berlin and Munich during the Pius XI papacy in a bid to deflect contentions from Jewish groups and others that the Vatican was silent in the face of the Holocaust.
