VATICAN CITY (AP) _ His speech slurred but his stance unwavering, Pope John Paul II told U.S. President George W. Bush on Friday how much he opposed the war in Iraq and of his vain efforts to head off the conflict.

The ailing 84-year-old pope, his hands trembling from Parkinson's disease, was determined to finish his text and alluded to the abuses of detainees by the American military at a Baghdad prison. He said such conduct troubled the civic and religious conscience of all.

Bush sat stoically beside John Paul as he spoke in the frescoed Clementine Hall, a papal assessment of events the price the American visitor had to pay for an audience he had sought.

John Paul did find signs of hope in the formation of an interim government in Iraq and said ``may a similar hope for peace'' be rekindled in the Holy Land.

``It is the evident desire of everyone that the situation now be normalized as quickly as possible with the active participation of the international community and, in particular, the United Nations Organization,'' the pope said

Summing up the Vatican visit, papal spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said, ``There were some points of agreement, especially regarding the process of normalization of Iraq.

It was the third meeting between Bush and the pope but their first since the Iraqi war.

``Mr. President, your visit to Rome takes place at a moment of great concern for the continuing situation of grave unrest in the Middle East, both in Iraq and the Holy Land. You are very familiar with the unequivocal position of the Holy See in this regard,'' the pope said, noting Vatican pronouncements and diplomatic efforts.

John Paul had sent an envoy to the White House, who said a preventive war lacking United Nations backing would be ``unjust.'' Two weeks later, the United States invaded Iraq.

The pope's words were not easily understood. He skipped one paragraph in his prepared text, but otherwise completed it. When he later said, ``God Bless America,'' it was loud and clear.

Bush, who presented the pope with America's highest civilian award, and John Paul talked privately for 15 minutes. In his public remarks after the pope spoke, Bush did not mention Iraq.

The president has courted Roman Catholic voters and he and the pope share such values as opposition to abortion.

The pope referred to this, saying he followed ``with great appreciation'' Bush's promotion of core values in American society, particularly with regard to respect for life and the family.''

Vatican officials recently have issued sharp criticism of Bush administration's actions leading up to the war and the abuse inflicted by U.S. soldiers on Iraqi prisoners.

Last week the pope condemned torture as an intolerable affront to human dignity, lamenting that reports of abuses ``constantly arrive from all continents.'' He made no mention of any countries or specific cases in his speech.

The U.S. ambassador to the Vatican, James Nicholson, recently sought clarification from the Vatican's foreign minister, Archbishop Giovanni Lajolo, who told an Italian newspaper the prisoner abuse scandal dealt a bigger blow to the United States than the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Lajolo sat near the pope during his speech to Bush.

``In the past few weeks other deplorable events have come to light which have troubled the civil and religious conscience of all and made more difficult a serene and resolute commitment to shared human values,'' the pope said, as allusion to the prison abuse and possibly other grave events such as the decapitation of American Nicholas Berg by Islamic militants in Iraq.
