6월 4일 순회 방문차 교황청을 방문한 일단의 미국 주교들에게 행하신 훈계에서 교황은 주교들은 평신도들이 특별한 사명감을 갖고 문화를 복음화 시키고 기독교 가치를 신장시키토록 격려하라고 촉구하셨다.

교황, 낙태, 동성애 단체 요구 등 “자기 중심적” 요구 개탄

바티칸 시티(AP)-- 가장 최근의 미국 사회에 대한 기탄 없는 평가에서, 요한 바오로 2세 교황은 금요일 낙태와 동성애의 용납을 마치 그것들이 인간의 권리인 것처럼  잘못 묘사된 “자기 중심적” 요구라고 비난했다.

교황은 방문중인 미국 주교들에게 최근 십 수년 사이에 "인권이라는 것들이 때때로 자기중심적 요구로 가치 절하되었다.: 그 결과 성인들의 선택권에 속한다는 미명아래 매춘과 포르노가 증가하고, 여성의 권리라는 이름으로 낙태가 용납되고, 동성애자들의 권리라는 구실로 동성애 모임들이 받아드려지고있다,"고 말씀하셨다.

 “그같이 잘못되었으면서도 만연되어있는 사고 방식에 대응하여 여러분들은 최선을 다하여 평신도들이 특별한 사명감을 갖고 사회, 공공 생활에서 문화를 복음화 시키고 기독교 가치를 신장시키토록 격려하십시오,” 라고 요한 바오로 교황은 미국 서부 몇몇 주에서 온 주교들에게 말씀하셨다.

가톨릭 교회는 낙태를 금하고 동성애를 죄로 간주한다.

부시 미국 대통령과의 사적 알현을 하신 같은 날짜에 주교단을 맞으신 요한 바오로께서는 가톨릭 교회의 가르침과 신앙에 대한 도전들을 인정하셨다.

모호한 도덕적 입장들, 특정한 이해 그룹에 의한 이성의 왜곡들이 바로 진리 자체를 찾는데 실패하고, 그리하여 인간 존재의 궁극 목적과 의미 추구를 포기한 인생의 몇몇 모습들의 예이다.

그는 교회 지도자들에게 중상, 모략자들에 개의치 말고 용기를 가지라고 촉구하셨다.

”오늘날 일부에서는 기독교가 자신의 구조적 문제로 중요성이 덜해졌으며 사람들의 영신적 요구에 부응하지 못하고 있다고 생각하고 있다,”고 그는 말했다.

모든 주교들은 주기적인 상담을 위해 5년에 한번씩 바티칸을 방문해야 한다. 올해는 미국 주교들 차례다.

               VATICAN CITY (AP) _ In his latest blunt assessment of U.S. society, Pope John Paul II on Friday denounced the acceptance of abortion and of same-sex unions as ``self-centered demands'' erroneously depicted as human rights.

                The pontiff told visiting U.S. bishops that in the last few decades ``rights are at times reduced to self-centered demands: the growth of prostitution and pornography in the name of adult choice, the acceptance of abortion in the name of women's rights, the approval of same sex unions in the name of homosexual rights.''

                ``In the face of such erroneous yet pervasive thinking you must do everything possible to encourage the laity in their special responsibility for evangelizing culture and promoting Christian values in society and public life,'' John Paul told the bishops, who are based in several western states.

                The Catholic church forbids abortion and considers homosexual activity a sin.

                Last week, John Paul warned another group of U.S. prelates that American society is in danger of surrendering to a ``soulless vision of life.

                Greeting the latest group of bishops on the same day he held a private audience with U.S. President George W. Bush, John Paul acknowledged the challenges to Catholic Church teaching and faith.

                ``Ambiguous moral positions, the distortion of reason by particular interest groups ... are just some examples of a perspective of life which fails to seek truth itself and then abandons the search for the ultimate goal and meaning of human existence,'' John Paul said.

                He urged Church leaders to be courageous despite detractors.

``Some today view Christianity as weighed down by structures and failing to respond to people's spiritual needs,'' he said.

                Every bishop must visit the Vatican every five years for periodic consultations. This year is the turn of bishops from the United States.
